Fall is the best time of year to sit inside with a blanket, warm beverage, and the perfect book. Whether your autumn vibe is all about the scary and creepy, or cozy and warm, I have a book for you. These are my favorite fall books sure to get you out of a reading slump or ignite some nostalgia. Check my book recommendations below to find the next fall read to add to your TBR pile!
First, for the people who like a lil something spooky-
Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
We have to start with a classic! Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving is a quintessential fall read. Although you might have read it in school, why not ignite some nostalgia and all the fall vibes by reading it again this season!
Class Trip by Bebe Faas Rice
One of my favorite books that I’d place in the beginner category of horror is Class Trip by Bebe Faas Rice. If you want the feeling of a classic slasher flick like Friday the 13th in a quick and fun read then you should definitely pick up Class Trip.
Carrie by Stephen King
You can’t go wrong with picking any title by Stephen King to have on your fall horror book list, and Carrie is no exception. The feelings of Halloween are present with themes of telekinesis, religion as a form of abuse, and of course, murder. Get all the scary vibes to bring you the spooky feelings of Halloween with this classic read.
Now, for those who like the softer aspects of fall-
North American Stadiums by Grady Chambers
I’m not usually a poetry person, but I think North American Stadiums by Grady Chambers does a great job of capturing the feelings of seasons changing and the passage of time. Chambers’ poems take you on a tour of the U.S. that is both aware and nostalgic. There’s also a ton of mentions of snow and winter, so maybe place this is at the end of your fall list to gear you up for the next seasonal transition!
Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer
I couldn’t have a fall book recommendation list without including Twilight. It’s practically a given that if you’re looking to get into the fall mood, especially on a rainy day, you can reach for your favorite of the Twilight series. You’ll be transported to a perfectly gloomy, aesthetically rainy version of the Pacific Northwest. Oh, and the vampires, and werewolves give it a nice Halloween touch.
Despite all the rainy fall and Halloween vibes in her books, I’m not a Stephanie Meyer fan, and have issue with the problematic elements of her stories. I would encourage you to take the books out from your local library or buy from a thrift store, any way that doesn’t directly provide funds to Meyer. You could also consider donating to the Quileute tribe here or learn more.
Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan
The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan are some of my favorite books of all time. I would argue that you could probably find some fall vibes in any of the PJO or HOO novels, but I’m going to say The Lightening Thief is the perfect place to start. As the first entry of the series and the back to school fall vibes the book kicks off with you’re sure to get some fall nostalgia, and it taking place in New York is only a bonus.
I also have some new books lined up for my fall TBR list that I cannot wait to start reading!
- Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie
- The Pumpkin Spice Cafe´ by Laurie Gilmore
- Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice
- You Shouldn’t Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose
I have high hopes for these novels and might even write a review and add them to my next fall rec list!
I want to hear if you’re looking to add any of my recommendations to your fall TBR list, or if you have other books you can’t wait to read this fall season! Leave me a comment below, or connect with me on social media. Happy fall reading!
